10月2日 Thoughts from General ConferenceThis weekend, our church held its General Conference. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, General Conference is held twice a year on the first weekend in April and again in October. It's a time when everyone in our church gathers to hear the words of the living prophets and to gain instruction and spiritual fulfillment through their words. It's held in five different sessions throughout the weekend; 10 am to noon, 2 pm to 4 pm on Saturday with a session for the men in the Priesthood from 6 pm to 8 pm. Sunday there are 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 4 pm sessions.
I know, that's all very interesting and everything, but what's your point Melissa? The point is that while listening to the talks this weekend, two things that were discussed grabbed my attention. You'll have to forgive the fact that I have a terrible memory for names, so I really don't remember who said what. I suppose the important part is that I remember the message they were trying to get across., but it would be nice if I could put a name to the quote, too.
The first one that struck me was this quote, "Patience is a gateway virtue." I had never really thought of it in this way. You usually hear the term gateway being used in a negative way (ex: marijuana is a gateway drug). In order to be kind, to be charitable, to be educated, to be loving, to be anything at all that is considered a virtue, you first have to have patience. Patience is one thing that I have to work on. More and more often I find myself getting irritated over little things. The last time I found myself lacking in patience, I looked up the word in the topical guide of the scriptures and read one of the scriptures listed each night until I found myself behaving better. In fact, that very activity was mentioned in the same talk and when I heard it, I gave myself a little pat on the back for thinking of it all on my own...man I'm good! Anyway, I guess I'll have to try it again, I've been snapping at the kids WAY too much lately.
The other quote that I liked was, "Magnifying your calling does not necessarily mean complicating it. Be wise with your time." So often I get caught up in some aspect of my life without realizing that I'm neglecting other, more important areas. Or you end up hating whatever task it is you've agreed to because you put so much of yourself into it that you end up exhausted. Use my time wisely, I'll have to remember that! 引用通告此日志的引用通告 URL 是: http://foldmylaundryplease.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!FD9AD75120A088E4!856.trak 引用此项的网络日志
