Julia Has Taken a Turn for the Worse

Well, today I got a short but scary email from my cousin Lisa.

"Julia is scheduled for another open heart surgery tomorrow at noon.  The residual hole that was left in her heart has gotten bigger and she’s not doing very well.  She looks better, but when she cries and gets upset, she’s not doing well."

That was all that Lisa wrote, the entire email.  The fact that it is so very short is what scares me the most I think.  No news is not always good news.  Please keep her in your prayers.  Her family is about at the end of their rope.

Thoughts from General Conference

This weekend, our church held its General Conference.  For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, General Conference is held twice a year on the first weekend in April and again in October.  It's a time when everyone in our church gathers to hear the words of the living prophets and to gain instruction and spiritual fulfillment through their words.  It's held in five different sessions throughout the weekend; 10 am to noon, 2 pm to 4 pm on Saturday with a session for the men in the Priesthood from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Sunday there are 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 4 pm sessions.

I know, that's all very interesting and everything, but what's your point Melissa?  The point is that while listening to the talks this weekend, two things that were discussed grabbed my attention.  You'll have to forgive the fact that I have a terrible memory for names, so I really don't remember who said what.  I suppose the important part is that I remember the message they were trying to get across., but it would be nice if I could put a name to the quote, too.

The first one that struck me was this quote, "Patience is a gateway virtue."  I had never really thought of it in this way.  You usually hear the term gateway being used in a negative way (ex:  marijuana is a gateway drug).  In order to be kind, to be charitable, to be educated, to be loving, to be anything at all that is considered a virtue, you first have to have patience.  Patience is one thing that I have to work on.  More and more often I find myself getting irritated over little things.  The last time I found myself lacking in patience, I looked up the word in the topical guide of the scriptures and read one of the scriptures listed each night until I found myself behaving better.  In fact, that very activity was mentioned in the same talk and when I heard it, I gave myself a little pat on the back for thinking of it all on my own...man I'm good!  Anyway, I guess I'll have to try it again, I've been snapping at the kids WAY too much lately.

The other quote that I liked was, "Magnifying your calling does not necessarily mean complicating it.  Be wise with your time."  So often I get caught up in some aspect of my life without realizing that I'm neglecting other, more important areas.  Or you end up hating whatever task it is you've agreed to because you put so much of yourself into it that you end up exhausted.  Use my time wisely, I'll have to remember that!

Trying Out A New Blog Site

I decided to give another blog site a try for a bit.  I'll still be posting here, but I'll be putting up duplicate posts at my new site.  I'd really appreciate it if you guys could hop on over there occassionally and leave me some input about it.  I'm getting very frustrated with Blogsome, though.  Spaces has its faults (and they are many), but it is truly blogging for dummies.  On Blogsome, there is a lot of html stuff to work with and I am CLUELESS about how to do any of that stuff.  The help page tells you to just copy and paste X wherever you want it, but I know nothing about html and therefore can't tell where to paste X once I've copied it!  Anyway, go check it out when you get the chance.  *sigh*  I'll be here, trying to learn how to use code.

Pictures from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

You've probably all seen these already, but I was so excited when I saw them that I had to share them with everyone!

Also, did you guys hear that Emma Watson may not come back to play Hermione Granger in the last two movies?  Come on Emma, it's just two more movies and we've waited oh so long to get the entire story into our DVD collections as well as our bookshelves!

Reasons to Avoid Housework

Here's a few reasons to avoid doing housework, just in case you needed some!

Julia Update

I just received another email update from my cousin Lisa about her baby girl, Julia.
"Julia came out of the Cardiac ICU on Monday.  She is now back in the room with Anna and I.  Her voice is vey raspy from the ventilator, but she's looking well.  The major change is that she's eating really well.  Now a bad feeding is 2 oz and she takes 3 1/2 oz at least once a day.  We are just waiting for her fluid levels to come down.  She gained 10 oz between Monday and Tuesday, which is NOT a good thing because that much of a weight gain is not a true weight gain, it's a fluid gain.  Which means there's probably fluid on her lungs again.  They took an XRay this morning and I'm still waiting to talk to someone who can tell me if there's fluid around her heart AND in her lungs or just in her lungs.

"There's a slight possibility we could go home tomorrow, but maybe not.  It depends on Julia.  She's on some pretty heavy diuretics right now.  They might decide to keep us until her fluid levels even out.  Plus, there's some problem with local pharmacies.  We need to find a pharmacy that will do "compound" prescriptions.  Which I THINK means that they need to take an adult pill of something and add grind it up and add it to a suspension liquid for babies.  I think her heart medicine needs to be made that way and perhaps her diuretic as well.  Most 'chain' pharmacies will not do this."
So that's the latest on little Julia.  She's not out of the woods yet, but things are looking up!

What Song Is Gideon Singing?

He's singing, "Ma-cho, ma-cho giiiiirrrll!" to Aurora!

(As you can see, just because I'm busy cleaning doesn't mean I don't still take about a hundred photos a day!)

Long Time No Blog...

Let me start out by apologizing for depriving my avid reader (yes, I'm talking to you) for my absence.  I've just been plain tired lately and my poor widdle brain had difficulty forming words into sentences.  I kept up with my blog reading, but you can probably tell from my way too long rambling run-on comments that I was in no shape to write to anyone about anything.

Why was I so tired?  Why thank you for asking!  That was mighty sweet of you!  Well, I've been cleaning!  My vision has cleared miraculously and I'm suddenly horrified by my surroundings.  I even got caught up on my ironing that's been building up since the beginning of June.  The only break I've taken was on Saturday when we drove out to Cave Falls to take advantage of the last bit of nice weather and Sunday (of course).

And exercising!  Man, you would think I was possessed by the soul of Denise Austin or something judging by the way I've been pushing myself in getting out to go running the past few days!  I guess my subconscious is nudging me along trying to get me to take advantage of the great weather while I still can.  Pretty soon, outdoor activities will be almost entirely out of the question.  Then it'll be back to the exercise tapes again.

Our Cave Falls trip was one of those spur of the moment deals where you quickly gather up your stuff and toss the kids into the van without taking the time to contemplate the fact that it is at least an hour and a half away from home.  It is, in fact, in Wyoming.  Yellowstone National Park to be exact.  But I love those sorts of trips.  They're always filled with the best memories.  And it was a beautiful drive.  The leaves are in full color change mode here making it very dangerous to drive when your having more fun looking at the trees than paying attention to the road.  Darn you nature!

We just drove along listening to Prarie Home Companion on NPR and enjoying one another's company.  Of course the kids slept most of the way there.  But we had so much fun once we got there.  It's a short hike from the parking spot to the actual falls and it's been way too long since the last time we went hiking.  The boys had fun looking at caterpillars and throwing rocks in the water.  Aurora has been much better about letting nature touch her lately, but it only applies to the sort of nature that gets mown on a regular basis, not mud, rocks, bugs, and loud, roaring, water falls!  She wanted to be held the entire time.  We tried to get some pictures of her with the boys, but no camera on earth is fast enough to capture the moment before the screams come!  Ethan and Gideon were fascinated with the cave (hence the name) that is next to the water fall.  But the little springs of water leaking through the rock walls worried Ethan a bit.

On the way home, we stopped to eat at Big Jud's in Ashton.  They serve up some deeeeelicious burgers, but it cancels out all of your dieting efforts for at least a week when you eat one!  It's just a shabby little diner, but it's one of our family's favorite places to go out to eat.  Isn't it funny, though, how kids don't notice a shabby exterior?  Whenever we decide to go out to eat, Andrew and I start suggesting nicer places like Applebee's or Wingers, but in my children's minds, the fanciest place serves your food on plastic plates with sticky bottles of ketchup and fry sauce on the tables next to the napkin dispenser!

Well, I hope that you, my dear reader, had a great start to your week.  I just hope that this illness that causes fits of cleaning and exercising is here to stay!  Have a great week!

When You Don't Have Any Bills to Pay

I used to feel like this when I wrote out checks, once upon a time!

And before you say anything, there is no point or ink in that pen.  It's Aurora's special pen.  For writing checks.
